CABANEROS NATIONAL PARK

General facts

Cabañeros National Park is situated in Montes de Toledo, Spain. The Park has an area of 390 square kilometres. It is the best and largest surviving area of Iberian Mediterranean forest. The fauna of the park is notable, both for its variety (276 species of vertebrates) and for the high percentage of endangered species. Mammals include the otter in the Estena river and four species of ungulates: wild boar, red deer, roe deer and (in the most forested areas) fallow deer. The Park is a Special Protection Area for birdlife and provides a home for the following notable species: the black stork,  the eurasian black vulture and the spanish imperial eagle.

When autumn arrives it marks the start of the rutting season, which is one of the most impressive spectacles in Cabañeros National Park.

Personal opinion

Probably the most famous part of the park that you can only visit with a guide, by car  - “La Raña” is known as the Spanish Serengeti for its wide yellow meadows at the end of summer, scattered trees and of course, the all mighty stags and deer. You can observe these amazing creatures quietly and listen to their bawls when the sun sets. I remember I watched that sunset with unwavering gaze, as the colours where absolutely stunning.

Besides deer and stags we've also seen a small boar having some chestnuts or acorns for supper.

Out of “La Raña” on our own account we've encountered a viewpoint for birds observation, plenty of stork nests to be seen but no storks around that time of the year.

My recommendation

Totally take a weekend to visit this area. I recommend you a great campsite called El Mirador de Cabañeros. Read my full review on Tripadvisor here.

Choose a partly cloudy afternoon to visit “La Raña” for that sunset that I was telling you about.

Book in advance your 4X4 trip, take some binoculars, sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream and water. Prepare yourself for the adventure!
