General facts
Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and has a volcanic origin. It was born through fiery eruptions and has solidified lava streams as well as extravagant rock formations. The island emerged about 15 million years ago. Its volcanic origin has created a landscape with more than 300 volcanoes. It is known as “the fire island”. With a good deal of flatland, Lanzarote is the least mountainous of the Canary Islands. Due to its low level it results a dry climate with little rain. The wind is constant and moderate almost all year, making Lanzarote a suitable place for the practice of yachting, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Personal opinion
I was just about to develop a theory of nothingness when Lanzarote surprised me with spectacular beaches contrasting the predominant black volcanic scenery. By the end of your visit we found these volcanic landscapes thrilling and peaceful at the same time. The clouds in constant movement, the crystal-clear waters, the beaches of golden sand, the huge craters and the tidy white houses spread through the black scenery, all this is characteristic of Lanzarote. But the wind, strong, warm wind blowing constantly, now that was quite an inconvenient for us.
My recommendation
Lanzarote is different from anything else you've ever seen.
Visit Timanfaya Park with its impressive Fire Mountains, discover the secret of the bowels of the Earth in Cueva de los verdes, go for a walk in the beautiful Cactus Garden, drink a delicious cocktail on Papagayo Beach or just drive through its arid landscape and admire the size of the craters, the curious vineyards and the white villages from some stunning view points. Also go shopping. Arrecife, the capital city is a great place for shopping, trust me.
Our accommodation was a cute bungalow in La Corbeta Hotel and we were pleasantly surprised. Read my full review on Tripadvisor here.
All in one, Lanzarote is a small paradise in hell.
Enjoy your visit here and there!
